"Heading up North"

Something that Michiganders do quite frequently on the weekends during the summer is to head up north. It is almost obnoxious when someone tells you this is what they are doing for the weekend - after all...it could be one of a thousand different locations they are heading to.....why not just say where you are going for the weekend?

So - that is what we are doing today... both took the day off, and are heading up to Grand Traverse State Park to do some camping..... was supposed to also be boating, but we decided to leave it home. which happen to be the second part of this post......

Something you don't want to hear in your neck of the woods (southern MI) when you are heading further north for a weekend is the weather man saying, "Fall-like Temperatures in July." Perfect. Soooo... I've packed up a lot of warm clothes - and I know it will be a fun, memorable time either way. More to follow up return.

Grand Slam

In the sport of baseball, a grand slam is a home run hit with all the bases occupied by baserunners, thereby scoring 4 runs - the most possible on a single play. According to The Dickson Baseball Dictionary, the term originated in the card game of contract bridge, in which a "grand slam" involves taking all the possible tricks. The word "slam", by itself, is usually connected with a loud sound, particularly of a door being closed with excess force; thus, "slamming the door" on one's opponent(s). The term was extended to various sports, such as golf and tennis, for winning all the major tournaments. It is even used in restaurants, for example a "grand slam breakfast" consisting of samplings of all the most common dishes. Word-playing sportscasters have also coined the popular (and etymologically unrelated) variation, "grand salami".

I hit my first, that I can remember, GRAND SLAM tonight, baby!! It was exciting. No pressure when I got up to bat, 2 outs (?I think?) , bases loaded, down by 2 runs...... and the umpire even comments to me about the situation. ....And even down to the last second as I ran home and the ball was being thrown back in.

My bribing Friends

These two guys are who you can thank for the blog yesterday...they both sent me messages saying they were not going to talk to me until I started blogging again.... so I promised that I would. wom is writing a book, I'm sure it will be a best seller in the near future. My mom used to work with wom, and she always says that he was so nice! And Craig - he collects comic books...he finally got a cell phone last year (blackberry!)... but we are still working on a new car. This is a picture from the wedding we attended a few weeks ago.

The Neatest Thing

we took Snickers for a walk this evening. (Please ignore the lack of puncuation surround the "w" key...it is missing from my laptop - soon to be repaired. I have copied the letter "w" and paste it each time I need to use it...so the effor of capitalizing it is just not worth it anymore. Getting repaired next week though!)

So - typically on our walk/run we go by some large fields where deer are typically grazing. we saw so many deer this evening! At the very end of our walk we see a little fawn poke his head out onto the road. He turns to look at us, and immediately starts running our way... he gets right next to Snickers almost to where Dave can reach down to pet him....and then our lug of a dog darted at him and scared him off! He was just the cutest little guy - coming to say hello!!! we decided this experience will probably never happen again, as long as we live. I didn't have a camera with me - but this image that I found is just about the same size as the little guy we encountered.
